4 Reasons You Should Take Up Coaching

All high performers – presidents, industry leaders, they all get various forms of coaching. Whether it’s for press relations, technical skills, or social etiquette, everybody can benefit from coaching. One thing I’d love for you to take away is to start investing in coaching. It doesn’t matter if you get coached by me or others, coaching accelerates the learning curve.

1. Where you are -> Where you want to go

How do you get to where you want to go quickly? Many people have been where you are now. If you’re playing at middle stakes now and you want to get to high stakes, why not find someone who has successfully completed this journey before? Find one or a couple of those guys and learn from them. Get coached by them. They have the map/blueprint, they have done that before. If spending a portion of your bankroll helps you jump stakes and improves your returns, what is the value of that to you?

2. Raise the stakes and accountability

It does not mean that when you get coaching, you’re going to raise the stakes and get to play the higher games. It raises your stakes. You’re usually paying for that coaching. You stand to gain a lot more when you’re paying for coaching as compared to free coaching. When you have money vested in the game, you’re forced to perform better. If you have these goals – if you say you want to study for 10 hours a week on solvers/you want to use simulators/you want to program something, the coach is there to be accountable for you.

3. Investing in yourself

Most of you think a lot about investing your money - using your money to grow more money. I want to challenge that belief in some ways. Aside from investing money and asset, a high investment return for life is investing in yourself. Skillsets/habits/thought patterns/beliefs/mental models are internal assets. Even if all you lose your life savings from war or a stock market crash, you still have the skills you gained from investing in yourself.

After I spent so much time getting coached and investing in myself, I’m extremely confident. Even if I lose everything, because I’ve invested in myself, I can go and play poker/make businesses/produce videos. Investing in yourself allows you to choose what your priorities are and where you want to go.

4. Blind spots

It’s very hard to be self-aware as there’re so many things around us. In poker, we have leaks as we don’t see our blind spots. In real life as well, most of the leaks we have are due to things subconscious decisions or values, things we are not mindful of. When you get a good coach to review your game/life, they see the blind spots.

When coaching others, I like to see how they describe their thought processes. If they explain it while they are playing, it forces them to not make any excuses. This is what coaching can help you to do – help you to see and understand your blind spots.

4 Reasons You Should Take Up Coaching

To be honest, getting coaching is something that is really essential in anywhere that you want to go. All of the best sportsmen have coaches. Everybody performing at the highest levels in the world – the presidents of the world – they all get coaching in their own ways. Whether it’s what to say, how to say these things, everybody can benefit from coaching. One thing I’d love for you to take away from this video is to start getting coached. It doesn’t matter if you get coached by me or others, whether you get coached for poker/mental game/life/business/public-speaking. If you get something out of this video and you go out of the way to find a coach for whatever you want to good at, I’ll be really happy that I produced this video.

1. Where you are -> Where you want to go

A lot of people were at where you are now, and are at where you want to go. How else would you be able to get there quicker? If you’re playing at middle stakes now and you want to get to high stakes, doesn’t it make sense for you to find somebody that has been playing mid stakes before and has found a way to high stakes? Find one or a couple of those guys and learn from them. Get coached by them. They have the map/blueprint, they have done that before. If you could spend that little bit of money or even a significant portion of your bankroll sometimes, it could help you go up in stakes and increase your chances of getting there, how much would that mean to you? That’s the question you must ask yourself.

2. Raises the stakes and accountability

It does not mean that when you get coaching, you’re going to raise the stakes and get to play the higher games. It raises your stakes. You’re usually paying for that coaching. You stand to gain a lot more when you’re actually paying for coaching as compared to free coaching. If your coach is giving you free coaching, he’s not doing you a favor as you tend to remember much more when you pay for coaching. When you have that amount of money vested/have that skin in the game, you’re forced to perform better. If your coach is someone that is good, he will hold you accountable. If you have these goals – if you say you want to study for 10 hours a week on solvers/you want to use simulators/you want to program something, the coach is there to be accountable for you. Just by having that money and accountability is a huge thing.

3. Investing in yourself

We talk about money and investing a lot. Most of you think a lot about investing your money - using your money to grow more money. I want to challenge that belief in some ways. Instead of always thinking about simply investing and getting more money, be it house/stocks/bitcoin, the most resilient and best thing you can do is investing in yourself. If you pick up skill sets/habits/thought patterns/beliefs/mental models that bring you further along the journey, even when times get really tough, if somehow the world breaks into a war, you lose your money and it’s not your fault, you still have the skills you gained from investing in yourself. Getting coached, reading books, watching videos. You have the ability to achieve all the things that you’ve achieved.

After I spent so much time getting coached and investing in myself, I’m extremely confident. Without a doubt, even if I lost all of my money somehow, because I’ve invested in myself, I can go and play poker/make businesses/produce videos. I have these skill sets that allow me to make more money. I like to really see it that it’s not about how much money I make now, it’s about which path I'm on now. My personal belief is that I want to educate people. I want to make money. I want to have good relationships. These are important things, and I want to make sure I'm on the fast track to achieving these things. Investing in yourself allows you to choose what your priorities are and where you want to go. Put the money on coaching, invest in yourself and that helps to get you to where you want to go.

4. Blind spots

One of the most important things is that coaches help you to find your blind spots. We all live in a world where it’s very hard to be self-aware as there’re so many things around us. A lot of times, if we’re talking about poker specifically, we have leaks as we don’t understand our blind spots. In real life as well, most of the leaks we have are due to things that happen at our subconscious level, or things we try to deny. When you get someone who is a good coach from outside to take a look at your game/life, they can notice blind spots/leaks that you cannot see. Perhaps leaks in your thought patterns.

When I'm doing coaching for other people, I like to see how they describe their thought processes. For the case of poker, I will ask for their thought processes while they’re taking the action. If they explain their thought processes on hindsight, usually it changes. If they explain it while they playing, it forces them to not make any excuses. This is what coaching can help you to do – help you to see and understand your blind spots.

If it’s personal coaching – helping a friend out or somebody in need - I can ask them why they made a certain decision they made; what were the thought processes that led to it, I can then try to see if what they think of why they made that decision was the real reason that I think they made it. A lot of times, we are driven by our core needs. For example, we make decisions that help us go towards pleasure. Sometimes, we make decisions that help us go away from pain. Quite often, our decisions are mainly based on these 2 things.
